Discover Meghalaya
Garo Tribe
The Garo tribe is divided into five exogamous divisions called Chatchis (sometimes rendered as Katchis). Two of these are relatively unimportant in that they include an insubstantial part of the population. The important ones are the Chatchis named Marak, Momin and Sangma.
Garo Cuisine
The Garos raise goats, pigs, fowl, ducks, and other animals for consumption. Meat is still an essential part of the tribe’s diet as hunters, although the days of sport hunting, elephants and even tigers are passed. As a result, their meals now primarily consist of chicken, pork, and fish.
Rabha Tribe
The Rabha people, are a Tibeto-Burmese ethnic group predominantly inhabiting the Northeast Indian states of Assam and Meghalaya and, some parts of West Bengal. They primarily inhabit the plains of Lower Assam and the Dooars, while some are found in the Garo Hills.
Nokrek Biosphere
Nokrek National Park is located in the Garo Hills of the state of Meghalaya, India. This national park is known for its rich biodiversity and unique ecosystems. It was designated as a national park in 1986 and is recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
